Lecture: How Our Government Segregated America

Feb 05 2019
Venue: Touro University California, Lander Hall Auditorium B, 1557 Azuar Drive, Vallejo

Tuesday, February 5, 2019

5:00 to 6:30 p.m., Reception to follow

Join us for a special lecture where Richard Rothstein, Distinguished Fellow at the Economic Policy Institute and Haas Institute of UC Berkeley, will explode the myth that America’s cities came to be racially divided as the result of individual prejudices, choices to live in same-race neighborhoods, income differences or the actions of institutions like banks and real estate agencies.  Instead, he will showcase the forgotten history of how racially explicit federal, state and local government policies created the patterns of segregation that persist to this day. Scholars have long believed the racial segregation of America’s neighborhoods was due to private activity – the actions of banks, real estate agencies and individual prejudices.  However, Richard Rothstein shows time and time again in his book The Color of Law that private activity could not have imposed the level of segregation that occurred without explicit government policies designed to ensure the separation of people of color from whites.

A reception will follow immediately after the lecture.
